Material Overview

UHMW can take whatever you throw at it without so much as a scratch...literally. It is highly resistant to abrasions and it has the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic. That’s why it’s used in everything from body armor to boats.

All this sounds great, but all you really want to know is whether or not UHMW is the right material for the job. It really depends on the job, but UHMW has several traits that make it ideal for a number of applications across industries:

HIGH IMPACT RESISTANCE - UHMW is highly scratch resistant and has the highest impact resistance of all thermoplastics. This means it is perfect for body armor or cut-resistant gloves, but it also means it’s great for the lining of industrial chutes and truck beds.

NO FRICTION - UHMW is also self-lubricating and has a low friction-coefficient that is comparable to PTFE (better known as Teflon™). This makes it highly suitable for industrial applications where wearing down is a primary concern. Because parts made from UHMW won’t wear down quickly, you save money on the cost of maintenance.

STRONG BONDS - Because of its chemical structure, UHMW has properties rarely found in other polymers. Its extremely low moisture absorption rate makes it suitable for marine applications. UHMW also has high resistance to corrosive chemicals and UV radiation. This same chemical structure makes it non-toxic and suitable for use in the food industry (as approved by the FDA).

  • High impact resistance
  • Cost efficient material
  • Non-toxic and approved by FDA for use in food industry
  • Very low friction coefficient
  • Good resistance to corrosive chemicals
  • Low water absorption

Applications

UHMW is an extremely tough and durable material. It’s ideal for industrial applications where the main concern is for a cost efficient option that is durable, has low friction, and resistant to corrosives.

  • Orthotics (joint replacement components)
  • Gears & bearings
  • Truck bed liners
  • Chute liners
  • Conveyor belt guards
  • Floating docks & dock fenders
  • Rope for winches, parachutes, sailing, and other high tensile uses
  • Chemical resistant piping systems
